University of Antique - Tario Lim Memorial Campus Library joins the nation in celebrating the 128th Philippine Independence Day.
Independence Day in the Philippines is a significant national holiday celebrated on June 12th each year. The day commemorates the country’s declaration of independence from Spanish colonial rule on June 12, 1898.
The Proclamation No. 28, series of 1962, issued by then President Diosdado Macapagal on May 12, 1962, officially declared June 12, 1962 as a special public holiday throughout the country.
President Macapagal famously argued that a nation's true independence should be celebrated on the day it declared its own freedom, rather than the day it was granted recognition by a foreign power (referring to July 4, 1946).
Hence, the change was made permanent and statutory two years later. Enacted on August 4, 1964, Republic Act No. 4166 officially designated June 12 of every year as "Philippine Independence Day." The same law renamed July 4—the previous holiday date—to "Philippine Republic Day" (now celebrated as Philippine-American Friendship Day).
